CCIMSS is an interdisciplinary research and teaching centre co-chaired by Prof Lindiwe Dovey and Dr Caspar Melville that focuses on exploring the dynamic relationships among cultural production, aesthetics, ethics and cultural economies in local and global contexts, with a particular focus on film and screen cultures, as well as music. It is the home of the MA Global Creative and Cultural Industries at SOAS.
CCIMSS organises a range of free events open to the public, connecting academics, artists, creative industries professionals, and wider audiences. Previous speakers include Ifeanyi Awachie, Marcia Carr, Colin Dale, Mahomed Bamba Diop, Irene Gonzalez-Lopez, Perivi Katjavivi, Mpumelelo Mcata, Philippa Ndisi-Herrmann, Clive Nwonka, Anamik Saha, Dave Swindells, Anna Teeman, and Michael W. Thomas. The 2021/2022 programme of events will be announced soon, so stay tuned and join our newsletter!
CCIMSS is also the home of the European Research Council-funded project Screen Worlds: Decolonising Film and Screen Studies, whose Principal Investigator is Prof Lindiwe Dovey. This project is studying “screen worlds” (in both their textual forms and industrial structures), with a focus on comparing African and other contexts. The project team is also making films and audiovisual essays. View the project’s official trailer for more information!
